WIP Wednesday - 11/30/2011

EDIT:

I Also linked up with Debbie at A Quilter's Table for Tuesday at My Table.  Make sure you link up all your holiday goodies there!  (FYI - The link is still open right now to link up anything you made last week.  Thanksgiving...hint hint...)

Debbie needs a button for her Tuesday at My Table. Any artsy people who would like to be awesome and create one for her? Who am I kidding? You're all artsy. LOL Let's see if we can come up with a good one for her. You can email it to me at iammaryburke @ gmail.com. Who knows...maybe the best button will get a little somethin'-somethin'.

The only thing I have worked on this week is binding my spiky zig zag quilt.  It is finished and has a new home with my nephew.  Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to get the photographs I would have liked.  :)

Pardon my unquilty stuff...

While at my mom's, I decided to take on some treat making.  It was my first time for both, but I made Spicy Caramel Popcorn (recipe by Smitten Kitchen) and Spiced Cocoa Roasted Almonds (recipe by Gimme Some Oven).

Both of these sites have some amazing recipes and you should definitely check them out.  :)

I have been teaching myself to draw zentangles.  My sister asked for a bird.  What do you think?

WIP Wednesday - 11/16/2011

The only thing I have worked on this week is my supernova quilt.

This beauty has been in the machine all week.  I only have about half the border left to do.  YAY!

I am trying to get it ready for binding before I go to my mom's house for Thanksgiving so that I will have some hand stitching to do.

This quilt is partially bound and will get completed at my mom's.

Sometimes, a WIP is still in the 'thought' stage.  My Asian mystery quilt is in a thought stage.  The top is done, it has borders...heck, it was even sandwiched and pinned.  I am thinking about un-pinning and un-sandwiching the quilt so that I can re-sandwich and pin with my new favorite bamboo batting.

The batting that is in there now is a poly-cotton blend and it is quite lofty.  I prepared this quilt so long ago, that I didn't know the differences in batting yet.  LOL

Over the weekend, my friend and I went to a couple of local shops to get in on some sales.  :)  One of them was Sew to Speak and I found these beauties for 30% (maybe 20% on one) off each!

From last week, I had 2 quilt name suggestions that I really liked and plan on using.  :)

Thanks to Marjorie of Marjories Busy Corner, the birdcage chain quilt becomes Caged Staircase.

And thanks to AlegoryDarling of Sew Allegorical, black/yellow quilt has become Formal Honeybees.

Both of these helpful ladies will receive an awesome fat quarter!  YAY!  Please send me your mailing address so I can get the 'thank you' gift out to you.

My Recent Experince with Stichn' Heaven

I ordered a butt-load of fabric from Stitchin' Heaven.

All 30 yards - stacked
<--  That is 30 yards of fabric.  Whew!  The hardest part was picking it all out.  Just kidding.  LOL!  I could have picked out twice as much.

Let's start at the beginning.

Have you heard of Stitchin' Heaven?  No?  Let me introduce you.

Followers, this is Stitchin' Heaven.  Stitchin' Heaven is a quilt shop in Quitman, Texas.  Stitchin' Heaven, these are my followers.

I know, I know.  Most of you don't live in Texas.  Me neither.  Stitchin' Heaven also has a great online shop.  If you sign up for their emails, they will email you often.  Sometimes, these emails have spectacular sales...like the one you see to your left.

Aha!  Now you see where I am going with this.  They sent me an email saying that you could buy 15 yards of fabric and get 15 yards of fabric free.  Wait, what?  That's right.  Basically, 50% off if you buy 30 yards in 1 yard (minimum) increments.  I immediately chose 30 yards of fabric and added them to my cart.

What?  You can't really see the fabric?  How is this one?  v

All 30 yards - spread out
Apparently, I took too long drooling over choosing my fabric and almost half of choices were already sold out.  Dang it!  They emailed me and asked me to please choose some more fabrics.  No problemo...

I chose enough new fabrics + a few extra...just in case.

Shortly after, I received a box in the mail.  Woo Hoo!  So exciting.  I open the box and start to fondle inventory the fabric.  I noticed that the fabric was very nicely folded and stacked and wrapped in pretty, purple tissue paper.  (Keep that for future use...).  In the box is also my receipt, a couple of advertisements about shop hops, specials, etc and a catalog...nice catalog.  Uh oh.  I'm short 10 yards.  Uggg.  I checked the receipt.  Charged for 15 yards worth...only 5 free.  There was a free fat quarter in there.  That's cool.

Okay.  How do I handle this?  I sent an email to Stitchin' Heaven.  I received a very timely response that there still weren't enough fabrics on my list to fill my order, but if I would choose another list of fabrics (20-25 of them), they would send me the missing 10 yards.  Sure thing.  I make my new selections and I wait.

Freckles
I get a second box in the mail.  YAY!  My missing 10 yards.  Ooh!  And another free fat quarter.  Score!

Camelot

Long Live Vintage
I was so pleased with their customer service, I thought that I would tell all of you about the store and my experience.

If you have ever been wary of buying fabric online, no fear!  Shop at Stitchin' Heaven.  They took care of me.  :)
Batiks

They have a very nice selection of fabrics, as you can see.  They have tone on tone fabrics, focus fabrics and even batiks!  Aren't these batiks just beautiful?
Aviary 2
Tapestry
One of the best things about ordering from Stitchin' Heaven (besides the free fat quarter with every order) is that they have the information about your fabric (name, line, color, etc) on a sticker stuck right to the cut of fabric.  Very convenient! Now, if any of my followers see the picture and say "What fabric is that on the left of the 3rd picture?", I can actually get them an answer instead of "I don't remember..."

Elvis Nights
For those of my followers that made it this far, I will be giving away a 1/2 yard of each of the "Freckles" to 1 lucky follower.  Notice that I didn't advertise this in the blog title?  Yeah, I know, sneaky.  I wanted to reward the people that actually read it.  All you have to do is comment on this post.  Tell me something witty.  You don't have to be a follower, but how else will you know if you win?  I will post a winner sometime on Sunday, 11/20.

Now, comes the hard part.  Putting all my new stash additions away...neatly.

WIP Wednesday - 11/9/2011

Okay.  This will make 2 weeks in a row of posting WIP Wednesday.  Yay me!  I hope to make this a more regular thing.  I am hoping to make blogging a more regular thing.  :)  We'll see how that goes.

I apologize for the crappy photos, but each link goes to one.  Also, each quilt needs a name and I couldn't think of a creative/ironic/totally rad name to use.  Feel free to help me out.  If I use the name you suggest, you might get a little somethin' somethin'.  I'm just sayin'.

First up, I made 2 mosaic blocks.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - 2011

This is my 2nd year participating in the Blogger's Quilt Festival hosted by Amy's Creative Side.  Make sure you stop by and check out all the blogs that linked up.  If you haven't yet, you should link up a quilt, too!

The quilt I have chosen to share isn't exactly finished yet...but that's okay, right?

I'm sharing my version of the Supernova quilt (pattern by Lee @ Freshly Pieced).

I have only been quilting for about 3 years now.  I love it!  When I got started, I didn't even know how to sew.  I learned by attending Mystery Quilt nights at my local quilt shop.  At first, I would just choose a 'kit' from the 6 or 7 choices they had picked out to make my mystery quilt.  It was like a paint by numbers.  Eventually, I started choosing my own fabrics.  The pattern was still a mystery.  As I started learning, I started choosing my own patterns AND fabric (this just happened recently).  Of course, most of my first quilts ended up as gifts for family.  That being said, this supernova quilt is the first quilt pattern that I chose both the pattern and the fabric just for me.  :)  I am so proud of the way it is turning out.  This is also the first quilt that I have ventured into quilting it however I wanted.  Most of my first quilts are just stippled.  This one, I decided to quilt to my heart's content.

I hope you like this quilt as much as I do...If only you guys could feel it with me...the texture is so nice!

WIP Wednesday - 11/2/2011

Last weekend, I went to a 4 day quilt retreat.  It was awesome (Thanks Kyle, Jan, Karen, Kris and Nancy)!  These wonderful ladies were my table mates.  So much fun!

At the retreat, we played games and ate snacks and had a grand time.  Oh yeah...we sewed some stuff too!

I managed to finish my bee blocks for both bees.  YAY!  I only have pictures of one set, though.  the other bee block was supposed to be a swoon block, but I didn't get enough fabric to complete it.  :(

I also finished this amazing jelly roll quilt:

I first saw a picture of this pattern at Hideaway Girl.  I didn't have a pattern and learned quite a bit while making this quilt.  Thank you so much for the idea, Hideaway Girl!

I also got some quilting done on my Supernova Quilt.  I hope to get this completed relatively soon.

I also got enough charm squares cut to make a plus quilt, but no pictures of that...

Make sure you stop by Freshly Pieced to see all the linked WIP posts for inspiration!
